THE PERFECT BACK SWING? (Ben Witter)
The back swing can set the tone for either success or failure in the downswing and despite there being no "absolutes" the correct position at the top can serve as a precursor to a more successful downswing and subsequent impact position.

A close friend of mine was up to visit this past weekend and we had the opportunity to work on his swing.
As I watched him swing, I noticed a tendency toward lifting out of his posture as he got to the top of his swing and a series of compensations that were causing him to have fits. These compensations caused one of two problems as he began the downswing... 1) He would come over the top and need to "hang on" to avoid hitting the ball way left, but would usually hit it way right as a result. or 2) He would compensate for his lack of complete rotation on the back swing by getting "handsy" on the downswing hitting the shot with hands and arms not creating any power or control... he and I jokingly refer to the latter move as "THE SLAP FACTOR" because he appears to be "slapping" at the ball rather than swinging through it.

I began thinking of ways to get him into a better position at the top of his swing without causing him the need to think too much as he got into the position as this quickly turns into disaster for him. (over thinking is the
cause of many a ruined golf swing).

Realizing that I wanted to keep him in both an athletic posture and relaxed mindset, I simply had him do the following drill. It's easy, natural, athletic, and produces the desired motion with almost no thought process.

Try it yourself and I think you'll agree that is the easiest way to achieving a perfect back swing.

1. Take your normal address position with a mid iron
2. Take your right hand off the club and put it behind your back
3. Swing the club with your right hand back & forth several times until you reach a consistent position at the top of your swing with your right hand only.
4. Once you've found a consistent position with your right hand, hold that position.
5. Without changing your posture or the position of your right hand, reach across your body with your left hand to grab the grip. This should put your hands in their normal grip position and give you the feeling that
your weight has loaded into your right foot, you've made a complete turn, and your ready to make a balanced swing.
6. Do several repetitions to the top of your swing. Once you're able to do this, take it to the top and swing through to a balanced finish.

Repeat this until you're comfortable with the position the drill puts you and then begin to incorporate the feeling into your actual golf shots.

I think you'll find that your swing becomes much more repeatable and significantly more efficient.
