Here's a simple little drill that will give an easily defined value to
your impact position and provide you the correct feel for creating a more
consistent and repeatable sequential motion toward impact.
- Take an old piece of drywall or plywood and lay it flat on your garage
or basement floor.
- Paint a solid line straight down the middle of the board.
- Take your stance on the board so the line is exactly in the center of
your feet at shoulder width.
(use an 8 or 9 iron)
- Set your club on the line in an address position and make a 1/2
takeaway until your left arm is pointing at 9:00 and the shaft at 12:00.
(Be sure not to hit the ceiling or any low hanging lights)
- Make your downswing at about 50% power and allow the club to strike
the board. (it will leave a mark)
- If the strike mark is to the left of the line, you're likely in a
pretty good impact position.
- If the strike mark in to the right of the line, you've likely released
the club too early and will probably hit either a fat shot or a high, weak
shot that has little power.
- Your objective is to make consistent swings where the strike mark is
slightly in front, or left of the line. This will teach you the correct
sequential motion with which to begin your downswing and consequently the
impact position.
Once you've achieved the correct sequence and delivery of the club to this
position, the clubface can be adjusted relative to the grip position to
achieve whatever ball flight is desired.
Although no results can be "guaranteed" I'll bet you'll have a much better
feeling for your swing after having successfully completed this drill.
