Off Season

The Off Season is Time for Improvement (Daniel Walker)

In the golf business the east Tennessee area is known to have an eight to nine-month golf season. Realistically, with the mild winters and improvements made to practice areas the off season is the best time to focus on the needed improvements for your game. I know of so many players that put their clubs in the garage the first time the Big Orange walks on to the field and pass up the best part of the year for golf. I have some suggestions to make next year your best year of golf.

Several golf clubs in the area have taken the time and expense to build an area for winter game improvement. Teaching studios with heat and air conditioning to make the teaching environment not only more comfortable but available year around. Another benefit that makes golf lessons and golf in the off season great is a lot of instructors and courses offer winter rates. I have personally started a lesson membership that offers unlimited lessons year around making golf lessons simpler and affordable. These are the types of things that allow you to take golf lessons and continue to practice in inclement weather. But, the question remains what can we do to see improvement?

Normally in the winter you will be playing less golf than normal. With day light savings time when you do get a pretty day you are lucky just to get some time to get to the range. This is the perfect routine to make your golf game better. We can’t fool ourselves in thinking just golf lessons alone are going to improve our game it will take some practice. I believe each individual has different goals, ability and time schedule. One of the first questions I ask my students are how much time are you truly going to practice? The answer doesn’t matter as long as it is honest. We together are going to develop a plan, which matches their criteria. A good instructor will offer ways of making changes that doesn’t require 4 hours a day on the practice range. Drills can be done with or without a club even done inside or outside. I have a lot of students that do drills tem minutes a night three nights a week in their living room and that little bit of repetition has helped them improve their game. Also, a few simple stretching exercises can help make starting the new season easier. The off season doesn’t necessarily have to be a time for dramatic swing changes it can be just a tune-up or even just to keep your swing grooved.

How many of you have pulled the clubs out on a pretty April day cleaned off the dust and headed out to the course to hit a few balls before your round. After your done you stop by your local drug store for some Ben Gay for those muscles that haven’t been used in a while and called to schedule your lesson to get your game back. Well, if you’ll consider doing a few things this off season you’ll clean up on the fifty cent Nassau bets in your group and your playing partners will be asking you for tips.
