| Keeping Records to Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses (Daniel Walker) | |||
|
I see too many players practice incorrectly.
Most go to the golf shop buy a bucket of balls take their clubs out to
the range, hit a few irons then pull out the big ________ (you fill in
the blank their all big something now days) and then start swinging for
the end of the range. Well I have a few suggestions to make you a little
more productive.
How many businesses operate without some type of evaluations of performance? How many businesses operate without some type of goal or plan? Not very many that are in business very long. Why? Management is constantly looking for what is holding business back. Well, no matter what level we play on we need to do the same thing with our golf game. Where and how can I improve? Three simple steps; evaluate, set goals and then a plan to achieve the goals. What are your strengths and weaknesses? Do you know? I will provide you a short list of what to evaluate after you play. These few records are your first step to progress. How many fairways did you hit in regulation? How many greens did you hit in regulation? How many times did you get the ball up and down when you missed the green? How many sand saves? Number of putts? How many three putts? Any penalty shots? Driving distance? **Where did your misses go? **This is probably the most helpful information you can provide your golf instructor. Since he isn’t with you all the time like Butch and Tiger this can help him know if there is a consistent pattern in your shot making. Do this 5 or 10 times and you’ll see what parts of your game you can rely on and what you need to improve on. Then step two. After evaluation, before you can set a plan to improve, you have to set a few goals. Goals need to be attainable, realistic and they must motivate you. I encourage all students to write them down then it becomes a promise to yourself. After goal setting you must develop a reachable plan. The player must understand what it takes to reach them and set a time limit. Make sure you’re not only practicing the correct part of your game, you are also practicing correctly. If needed get help from your local professional to assist you by providing good mechanics, practice drills and ways to evaluate it. Take the time to help yourself improve by following these easy steps. |
