| X-OUT YOUR SLICE (Dane Pontiff) | |||
|
Nothing
is
more
important
in
the
amateur
world
of
golf
than
curing
a
slice.
And
yet
for
many
golfers,
slicing
is
pretty
much
a
frustrating
situation.
Most
beginners,
naturally
enough,
try
to
take
the
club
head
straight
back
from
the
ball,
figuring
that
a
straight
shot
will
be
produced.
This
ease
of
perfection
sometimes
causes
the
player
to
loop
on
the
back
swing
and
turn
the
shoulders
before
the
hips.
This
slight
error
will
cause
an
outside-in
swing
that
will
produce
a
low
pull
hook
or
a
devastating
slice,
depending
on
the
club
face
position
at
impact.
To produce a consistent straight shot or a desirable draw, I suggest visualizing an imaginary X underneath the ball, with the ball being the middle of the X. Take the club straight back picturing your down swing will follow along path A (see graphic below). The club head will be brought back only slightly inside the target line. Then try to think of hitting against the lower inside quarter of the ball at impact. When the club head comes through path A, the inside-out swing will cause a slight counterclockwise spin on the ball, thus producing a slight draw. Don't forget to let the hands come down on the down swing, letting your right elbow fall into your right hip pocket before making your hip turn. This will result in the club following behind the hip turn and will keep your head behind the ball throughout the impact position (which is a major factor in hitting a glorious draw). Remember, the key word here is "mentality." With plenty of practice and a clear mind, you will be able to hit a consistent draw. If you miss your path a little, I guarantee it will surely be a straight shot.
