THREE STAGES OF SAND PLAY (Dan Pasquariello)

I’m certain that we’ve all heard how simple getting out of the sand is since you don’t even have to hit the ball to be successful. But, in reality, the sand shot can be a disaster waiting to happen if we don’t have a plan to escape from the trap. The old golf adage…”get it out, get it on, and get it in” when pertaining to shots out of the sand is right on the money if we read between the lines.

Stage One: Get it out…Forget the sand wedge, lob wedge and gap wedge for this shot! Take the pitching wedge-with a good lie in the bunker-keep the clubface square to the target and make your normal golf swing (a circular, horizontal, tilted Ferris-wheel like motion) and the ball will come out very easily. Hit a few inches behind the ball (it really doesn’t matter how far or behind since there is a margin of error from two to six inches behind). Forget outside-in, early wrist-hinge, open stance, weak grip, etc., etc., etc. Keep a square stance and make a golf swing. Your goal is to get it out! For a bad lie, close the face of the pitching wedge and repeat the above procedure. The ball will come out lower and run a little more, but it will come out.

Stage Two: Get it on…For this category of golfer, you already feel comfortable with getting the ball out, and you need to get it on the green.  Use your lob wedge, sand wedge and pitching wedge and divide the green into three sections. The front third of the green, use your lob wedge with a square clubface, and take a normal golf swing as described above. The middle third of the green should accept your sand wedge, and for the back third of the green the club of choice is the pitching wedge. You have used the same swing motion with three different clubs and have hit the ball three different distances…short, medium and long…how simple is that? Become familiar with those distances.

Stage Three: Get it in…You are now ready for graduate school in sand education! (Lawrence of Arabia’s foolproof technique for sand success). Use the above three clubs (lob, sand and pitching wedges) for a variety of sand shots. Each wedge will go different distances if you adjust the angle of the clubface (open, square and closed). Find out how far each shot goes, with each club, from different textures of sand, and soon your fear of the sand will disappear as fast as those unwanted strokes on your scorecard.
