Bunkers

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY (Dan Pasquariello)

First of all, we need to get our terminology correct. We need to think of the sand as the beach. The beach is a place where people go to relax and relieve stress. Blue skies, warm weather; palm trees, tan bodies and emerald seas.

The terms bunker, hazard or trap have an ominous connotation. You have to dig your way out of a bunker, avoid a hazard, or escape from a trap. The beach is a worry-free environment. In the sand, you will encounter resistance in the form of the sand, so you need to make a full swing and expect to feel the sand grabbing the club. That is why you open the clubface (for good lies with the ball sitting up), square the clubface (for bad lies with the ball sitting down), and close the clubface (for ugly lies with the ball being buried).
