| SHORT PUTTS DEVELOP FUNDAMENTALS (Todd Lawton) | |||
|
We
will
start
with
short
putts
because
we
are
going
to
work
on
the
fundamentals
of
the
putting
stroke,
which
is
to
have
a
good
setup
so
you
can
line
up
the
putter
head
to
the
target.
The
target
for
most
short
putts
will
be
the
hole.
As for the proper setup, you should move closer to the ball than when you hit a drive. The stance will be narrowed a little, the ball position will be in the front third of your stroke and your eyes should be over the ball; keeping your eyes over the ball allows you to be able to see the line to the intended target. Now we are going to look at controlling the intended line and judging the distance. As you set up, you should concentrate on taking a shorter back swing and a longer follow through. This motion will give you more acceleration through the ball. Moving from short putts to a more intermediate put, we will set up about 30 feet away from a hole that is slightly uphill. The characteristics of the longer putt is very similar to the short putTs, but you should be conscientious of the distance that the putter head travels. You should try to minimize the amount of wrist that you use in the shot and try to generate the power like a pendulum from your shoulders. As you practice, you will develop a feel for the various distances and how far your club head moves for each shot. One thing to remember while practicing these putts is to be steady over the ball where you are still with your head and movements. The final aspect of putting that we are going to work on are the longer breaking puts -- some people call them the lag putts. We are about 30 feet away from the hole and we place a ball that is even with our intended target to create an intermediate target. You should first read the putt and determine where the put is going to break; we set up our ball about two feet right of the hole. Now, you can picture in your mind that the ball is the target and aim about two feet right. Speed plays a big factor in breaking putts, and you will once again want to pay attention to the distance that the club head moves to work on controlling the longer distances. When
practicing
this
putt,
remember
to
reposition
the
target
and
take
the
target
away
from
the
hole. |
