YOUR ROUTE TO MORE FUN AND LOWER SCORES (George Connor)

How important is the Short Game?

One good full swing does little in assuring that your make par. One good short shot can virtually assure a par. The short game can be a fast, painless and easy way to cut your handicap in half. That's right, half! As you start the season, analyze the shots you take in a round of golf. How many shots do you throw away with poor putts and bad chips? We won't even get into the number of shots you fail to save by not hitting forty to eighty yard pitch shots close to the hole. If an 18 handicap player hits four greens in regulation, but can get up and down on seven of the fourteen greens he missed, what could happen?

Let' add it up. He two putts for par on the four greens he hit. He gets up and down seven times. We are up to eleven pars. On the remaining seven holes, he makes three bogies, two doubles and a triple. That comes out to a twelve over par 84. He is certain to win some money, and he won't be an 18 handicap for long.

What will it do for you?

Becoming adept in the skill of the short game will not only lower your scores on their merit alone. It will make you a better ball striker as well. How can that be? If you are 170 yards from the green and know that you have to hit the green in order to make par, you are likely to be nervous and tight. Not the conditions that lead to good swings. On the other hand, if you are confident in your short game, you can be confident when you are 170 yards away, knowing that if you were to miss the green, you will probably make your par anyway.
