Golf Swing

GETTING THE FEEL OF IT (Fred Bond)
Feel for someone who plays infrequently can be an elusive if not flighty experience.  The short game - putting, chipping, and pitching can be significantly improved by utilizing a measured stroke or swing.

Begin on the putting green by seeing just what length of stroke is required to hole a 6' level putt. Observe what pace is used and the length of follow through compared to the backswing. Once that has been determined you now have a gauge to measure various lengths of putts, both uphill and downhill.
Chipping can be an extension of the putt by using the measured swing for the distance required.

Although a wide variety of clubs could be used to chip with, a sand wedge can be used to assimilate almost any club desired. If you were wanting to make a 7 iron chip using the sand wedge, place the ball toward if not slightly behind your right foot. To replicate other clubs using the sand wedge move the ball either forward or back depending on the shot and loft required. The advantage to using the sand wedge for all shots around the green is that you are using the same weight, lie angle, length and head shape for all of these shots. Additionally, the sand wedge has the largest face of any club in your bag!

Pitching can be improve by understanding the length of swing required to cover certain distances as it relates to the height you want the shot to have, eg. a 30 yd. pitch could have a longer swing if a higher shot is required as opposed to the same length hit lower when you have more green to work with. By practicing various distances and shot heights with the same club you can begin to understand the length that is needed to make the shot.

It is important to note that when the club head arrives prior to the hands at impact that an undesirable result will occur but this is true for all shots.
