From Jeff,

I am buying a new set of irons, the
Wilson Deep Red Fat Shafts (steel). I am getting mixed opinions as to
whether to get the STIFF flex or the REGULAR flex. I am big guy
(6'2", 240lbs, and usually shoot around 90. I don't, however, swing
the club extremely hard. My best shots are with a nice, easy swing. What
do you think? Regular, or Stiff? Thanks. |

"Go get fitted - it will only take an hour. Then you can
be sure to get the clubs that fit you."

"To Jeff :Go get
professionally fitted by a certified club fitter or PGA
Member. Any ways shaft flex is determined by how much you retain
your wrist cock on your down swing not your physical strength. You
should also have the correct flex point (low, mid, high). It also
sounds like having your hands measured to get correct grip size
would also be beneficial to you as well as having the correct
shaft length & lie angle."

"Jeff - Swing speed is one
measure of the shaft flex you will need and the rhythm of your
swing is another. I have fit smooth swingers in regular shafts
even though their swing speed was over 100. But, that was only
after careful observation of their swing and having them hit
different kinds of shafts in the 2 flexes. Try out both shafts on
the range. Warm up with irons first and then hit 3 balls with one
club, then 3 with the next. See if you feel a difference and
observe the ball flight. If you cannot figure it
out by yourself seek out a qualified club fitter to assist you as
you don't want to invest in clubs that don't fit no matter what
the cost or how good a deal it is. Good Golfing."

"Jeff:
In my experience with club fitting players with the GT Adams
Shafts and the Wilson Fat Shafts you can play the regular flex.
The design is to eliminate some of the shaft flutter and torquing
at the bottom of the shaft. Therefore, players can get away with a
lighter flex."

"Jeff: see if you find out your
club-head speed at impact. Most golf shops have a device that
can measure it. If it's over 88 mph you need a stiff shaft. Take
your normal swing to get your reading."

"You definitely should have the
stiffer shaft as you are strong enough to swing it. Remember, in
golf you don't ever swing hard, you may swing fast, but never
hard. Hard is usually physical, swing is not. Go have a golf
lesson from a professional that is recommended by another golfer
that has had help to help you lower your handicap. Good
luck." - Pat

"Have you hit these clubs? Why not go to a center where
you can hit the different shafts, have a professional watch you
and go from there. I can do this for you at The GolfShack 1631 N.
Bell School Road, Rockford Ill. Call me if you want to set a time
and I'll watch you hit both clubs - no charge!

"As a Wilson Staff member, I would suggest the regular
shaft irons. Due to the diameter of the shafts, the Fat Shafts
tend to be a little more toward the firm side. A nice easy swing
like yours will tend to get better results from the regular shaft."

"Go to your local PGA Professional and get custom
fit. Listening to your friends is great, but getting the
advice from someone trained in club fitting is the proper thing to
do. I always tell people that are interested in clubs to
make sure they get custom fit whether it is from our staff or
somewhere else. When you are spending $600 - $1000 on a set
of clubs why not make sure they fit. Remember, when you are
looking at buying a suit for X amount of $'s you don't go in and
say I like this color and style I will take it. You make
sure that that suit it tailored for you properly so you look good
in it. Why not make your golf clubs make you look that good?
Thanks for your question."

"Your size has potential for an effortless
swing to be 115 mph - this needs stiff. GET YOUR technique
in order FIRST." - Doug

"Jeff: Make sure you get fit by a fitter who is authorized to
fit that product. That is the only way to find out what type of
shaft you need." - John
