Bruce Cohen: The Personal Challenge
Imagine Kirk Triplett as an engineer. That’s what he almost became before he met Bruce Cohen. Cohen encouraged him to first explore the possibilities of a career in golf. Today, Kirk Triplett is consistently one of the best players on the PGA Tour. That’s the kind of effect Cohen has on his students. In fact, one of his favorite things about teaching is introducing people to the game of golf – people who may have potential they don’t even realize.

"I’ve always enjoyed the personal challenge of golf," says Cohen, who’s been teaching since 1975. "I give students a very good understanding of the game and the shots it requires." Students taking lessons from Cohen enjoy his ability to keep things simple but still be very thorough. Many students come to Cohen looking for that all-important "consistency;" Cohen delivers with his easy-going manner, patience and determination to see students succeed.

Having taught all levels of golfers, Cohen suggests beginners first spend a great deal of time on and around the putting green. Intermediate golfers should study and understand ball flight applications. Advanced players need to work on routine and swing path. Cohen’s own practice routine always begins with short putts, moving through chipping, pitching and on to full shots. His favorite shot to make is a pitch shot; shots that sometimes give him trouble are those that require a low left to right flight out of the rough.

Cohen started playing golf at age 20, later than most professionals, but he developed his skills quickly and had an eye for improving others. He attended Indiana University and later coached golf there. As a player, he participated in the Indiana Ping Tournament Series, the Indiana PGA Club Professionals Championship, the Indiana State Open Championship and the Indiana PGA Senior Championship. The best shot he ever recalls making was a double eagle on the 1st hole at Indiana University.

Typically dressed in blue and black on the course, Cohen enjoys playing Sycamore Hills, Crooked Stick, Meridian Hills and South Bend Country Club. Cohen’s golf travels would most likely include Phoenix, Arizona. Inspired by players such as Tiger Woods and Kirk Triplett, Cohen enjoys watching them play. He also likes a good skins game. Should things get difficult during a round, Cohen has just two words of advice for himself: Be patient.

Cohen resides in Granger, Indiana with his wife, Judith. He has two grown children, Abigail (23) and Jesse (26) and two pets, Bogey and Pepper. Cohen can be reached at BCohenPgaPro@aol.com. Thanks, Bruce!
