Variable Lie Drill
Using one ball, chip and putt from
10 spots around the green. Imagine you are on the course, and the shot
has meaning. In other words, imagine that this very shot could clinch
the win. With each shot, change the distance and lie of the ball. As
needed, also change the club. Use a more lofted club for a chip shot
needing less distance and roll and a less lofted club for a chip shot
needing more distance and roll. Maintain your focus on the target. Be
sure your club selection matches the shot requirements. Keep track of
your "up and downs" (chips and one-putts) so that you learn
what your strengths and weaknesses are and know what to focus on.
Ladder Drill
In your practice area, place five
or six clubs in a row like rungs on a ladder, each six feet apart.
Practice chipping with the goal of landing the ball between the spaces.
This drill will help you begin to visualize the trajectory and carry
distance of your chips when varying the length of your backswing and
using different clubs.
Cluster Drill
This drill is designed to help you
develop a feel for chipping from various distances. Around a green,
select a club and five balls. Chip the first ball. Your goal is to chip
the next four balls in a cluster around the first ball. Change clubs and
distances. This is an excellent drill to use before playing to get a
feel for your stroke and the speed of the greens.
Along-the-Track Drill
From about five feet off the
practice green, place two clubs about two feet apart in a track toward
the intended target. Chip balls from within the track, keeping the club
moving back and through along the track toward the target.
Chip and Putt Drill
Play a chip and putt course around
the green. Using one ball, start from off the green, chip to a target on
the putting green, and putt out. Set up from nine different points
around the fringe or just off the fringe, and see how many par 3s you
can make.
Club-Swapping Drill
Chip 20 balls from the same spot to
different targets around the green. Experiment with different clubs,
seeing which clubs work best for different distances.
